A Brief History of Dublin City

Although the official date of Dublin's establishment was 988 A.D. the area was first settled by the Vikings. Considerable evidence of their settlement has been uncovered and they remained in occupation until the 9th century when the Danes attacked and took control of the city. The city changed hands on several occasions until, in 1171, Henry II of England invaded and expelled the Danes. Over the centuries the city saw turbulent times with continuous warfare, invasions, sieges, the black death, the potato famine, the war of independence and much more. Yet it survived to become one of Europe's most vibrant Capital cities.
